Hi there. I am thinking of buying my very first iMac and I am looking at the 21" version. Here in Ireland there is €200 difference between the 2.7 ghz and the 2.9 versions.

What I want to know is, is this difference worth the price and also would it be noticeable ?

I am a keen amateur photographer and will be using Photoshop and some other photo editing tools on it predominately as well as surfing the net. I am not a developer so would not be writing or running code on it. Nor would I be playing games on it.

So what do you think ? Save the €200 and put it towards the cost of Photoshop, or would you recommend spending the €200 and getting the 2.9 version.

Take note that new iMacs will be released shortly. Apple has stated they would be released in December (in the US). I have no idea when they will be available in the UK or Ireland though. But it may be worthwhile to wait a bit before you buy or decide what to buy.

You can never upgrade the processor after you buy it. You can, however upgrade the RAM and HD. Get your RAM and HD upgraded after purchase, but get the best processor you can.

Here in the United States the difference in price between the "Late 2012" 21.5" iMac with the 2.7ghz and the 2.9ghz cpu is $200.

Looking at the Geekbench 2.0 scores (32 bit & 64 bit modes):

- 2.7ghz (8068 / 9145)
- 2.9ghz (9506 / 10756)

As you can see…the 2.9ghz scores approx 1400 points higher in 32 bit mode…and approx. 1600 points higher in 64 bit mode)…than the 2.7ghz model.

To me this is a fairly sizable increase…and worth the extra $200 for the 2.9ghz cpu.

Also realize that the 2.9ghz 21.5" iMac comes with slightly better graphics hardware.

Tnx for the help! Maybe it's better to wait a little longer, save some more, and go for the 2.9 with 16GB RAM.

Well to me 200 Euro is well worth the difference in the 2, especially after looking at the geekbench scores Nick provided, then again the 200 difference might not be to the next person. We are all different. What you need to work out is if you could afford 400 Euro 200 for the 2.9 upgrade and then the 200 towards Photoshop.
Just for FYI 2.7 is well good enough for anything you want to do. I used to have a 2.4 MBP running PS CS5 and a lot of other running Apps with 4GB RAM and i had no problems...
