Updating iTunes on iPad mini

HI. This is probably obvious, but I can't figure it out ... I'm trying to sync my iPad mini to my Macbook but iTunes is giving me this error message: "cannot be used because it requires iTunes version 10.7 or later. Go to iTunes to download the latest version of iTunes."

I found that website on the ipad and clicked the "download" link. I'm still getting the same error message, though. When I open iTunes on the iPad, it opens to the "Store" screen and I don't know how to find out what version of iTunes it has, or where the download went. I can't even figure out how to exit the iTunes store Auggh! I would appreciate any guidance. Thanks!

You are misinterpreting the message.

It is telling you to upgrade the version of iTunes ON YOUR MAC.
