Mountain Lion on older macbook?

I have Macbook pro 2008 with OSX LION, and wondering should I upgrede to Mountain Lion? I heard that baterry life is shorter and old macbooks like mine getting much more hotter after upgraded to new system?

My first thought is...do you have any sort of mandatory reason to upgrade to Mountain Lion such as:

- software compatibility
- hardware compatibility
- Mountain Lion OS features you cannot live without
