Opening Word 2004 documents in Mountain Lion

I recently installed Mountain Lion and am now unable to read all older Microsoft Word documents. Anything installed with Word 2004 won't open. How do I open or redo these documents so I can read them?

You can't. Word 2004 is PPC and can only be used with versions of OS X up to and including Snow Leopard. After that, (Lion and Mountain Lion) applications have to be Intel. You will either have to upgrade your version of Office to 2008 or better yet, 2011. You really need to find out which applications are compatible before upgrading. Lion and Mountain Lion can only run applications programmed for Intel.

Can I at least save my old MS Word 2004 documents by taking them on a flash drive to a computer with, say, snow leopard, and then saving them as updated word docs? Or have I lost them entirely?

Your Word documents are not lost. Just save them off on a flash drive or external hard drive and later on when you upgrade to Office 2008 or 2011, copy them back and open them with the new version of Office.

Or just get one of the folllowing apps to be able to open them until you upgrade your version of MS Office.
