Connecting external monitor

iPhone 4s | iPad 2 | 21.5" iMac 2.7GHz 1TB
I am trying to connect an external monitor to my iMac. The external monitor is a few years old and has a VGA which goes into a DVI which then went into my old PC. I bought a mini DIsplayPort to DVI adapter which i have connected to the thunderbolt port on my iMac. The external display does not appear on my iMac and my external monitor displays nothing either. My monitor says VGA: No input when it is switched on, but all the cables are connected.

If the port on your monitor is VGA, then you'll need a mini displayport to VGA adapter like this.

Looks like i will have to go and buy another adapter then, thanks for the help.
