Ignore the below.. I found the problem.. which was just the 'universal access'..
My main window on my mac 10.6.8 has just got bigger.. to see the dock I have to move my curser down to the bottom and the window then will move up so that I can see the dock.. but then the top with 'view. history. bookmarks etc.. are hidden.
I've tried looking in my manual for a 'default' window, but either I'm not looking in the right place or I don't know what I am really looking for.![:\](/mac_images/images/smilies/Undecided.png "Undecided :\")
