I am wondering why my time machine backup is almost 10 gb smaller than the space used up on my hard drive. My time machine backup is 183.87 gb and my hard drive is 194 gb. I have excluded no files from my backup. Did some of my stuff not get backed up?

10 GB is pretty big diff - but the sleep image file itself can be 4 GB and larger.

Time machine backup 130 GB smaller than hard drive

On my machine (Mid 2012, 10.7.5) Time Machine only backs up 170 GB of 306 GB on the hard drive. This happened for the first time after I needed to reformat the external hard drive (Seagate 1 TB) because it became read only.

I watched the backup process, and at 165 GB Time Machine slowed down to a crawl, then it finalized the backup without copying the last 130 GB or so.

I tried using Super Duper! on the same drive, and was able to copy 290 GB. So there still is some "missing" memory, but nearly as much.

Any ideas of what is going on would be most appreciated.Thanks.
