Hello all,
I am having some issues as a new apple user, any help or advice is much appreciated.

For starters, I just bought a MacBook Pro and I'm running Mac OS X v 10.4.11. It a 2.16GHz intel Core 2 duo with 2gb ram and 667 Mhz speed.

With my PC I can go to the itunes Store and link into my account with my apple ID and Password. This gives me access to all the downloaded apps from both my iPhone and iPad.
However, on this Mac when I attempt to upgrade from my current version 7.0.2 to version 10.7, I am given a message "couldn't install iTunes.pkg This package type requires Mac OS X 10.5"

In order to upgrade to the correct version, it seems I need to upgrade my OS to a newer version than my current 10.4.11.

Does this mean I need to purchase Mac OS 10.5 Leopard, or can I just get Snow Leopard and bypass the 10.5? Is my MacBook able to do this or did I just buy an outdated CPU that won't go any further?
Again, I'm an apple rookie but have used my iPad and iPhone for about a year now so I'm not totally naive.

Please help!!! Thank You!!

Welcome to Mac-Forums

You can definitely go to Snow Leopard and that's a better (and cheaper) option than Leopard. You will have to call Apple and purchase the retail version of Snow Leopard for $29.99..

Can you click on the Apple logo on the top left and then choose About this Mac and tell us what it says as far as the age of your Mac? That's going to determine if Lion is the latest version you can upgrade to eventually or if you can beyond that..

Thanks for the quick response. The Mac says (at the bottom, 1983 - 2007) Also, is there a phone #to call and order the retail version of Snow Leopard for $29.99?

Thanks again for your help

We don't want the Mac Copyright information..but that does at least hint at this being a circa-2007 MBP which is most likely not eligible for Mountain Lion but could be able to run Lion.

I would start with the 1-800-MY-APPLE (800-692-7753) number and tell them you want to purchase Snow Leopard for your MBP..

You guys are fast

Thanks for your quick responses. I still don't see where to find the CPU age by looking at the apple icon- about this mac. Would it be under 'more info'? At this point it's probably irrelevant, but I want to know as much as I can.

Oops sorry..I've got the recent OS X's on my brain..with Tiger, do hit the More Info button and that should drop you onto the Hardware selection which will provide a series of information like the image below. You are looking specifically for the Model Identifier.

Just for your information, the newer versions of OS X have a modified version of About this Mac like the image below where it says what year the Mac is from.

The posts I've read here before say the cost is $19.99 - without shipping or sales tax, of course.
