Just wondering if anyone can help with this?

just returned from Morrocco yesterday, plugged my iphone in to charge and it appears to have factory reset itself, losing (250+) photos from the trip, and started updating itself to ios6

now it's still updating, i had to leave it at home to go to work.

Have i actually lost everything or will it re-appear when the updates finished?

Updates don't install automatically so you must have had to accept it. However, unless something goes horribly wrong none of your data will be impacted by an iOS update

If you sync;d with iTunes before you did the update it should have your photos in backup which even if you do an update you will notice it automatically backs up your iPhone first.
