My mac is having trouble starting up

Hello,

Can anyone help me? My macbook pro version 10.7.5 is having trouble starting up often times when i log in my documents and downloads show they are empty and the gray sceen at the top with my name and the date dont show up at all, whenever i try to click something the screen freezes and i get the color spinny wheel, often times i have to restart my mac in order for itself to fix. Is this an issue i need to bring up with the folks at the genius bar or can i fix this myself?

How full is the hard drive on whatever Mac you are using as post does not say? Go into Recovery and do a check of your hard drive. Here is an instruction on doing this:-
