Hey,

I use my Mac notebooks with an external 27" LED cinema monitor, so my Mac's are operating with closed lids in my everyday use, work and home.

I used my MacBook Air like this for about 22 months and it seemed to be getting hot more often as the months pasts. The fan was noticeable more often. It seemed to be working quite hard in the end. Do you think I might hurt my notebooks using them with closed lids 95+% of the time? I just started using my new MacBook Pro and better safe than sorry so what do you guys think?

Well, you are reducing the amount of airflow with the lid closed. Don't have a clue what the long term effects might be, if any.

I'd think you could just open the case up every once in awhile (perhaps every 6 months) and blow all the dust bunnies out and clean the fans though. I only do mine about once a year, but they could stand it more often.

I do this daily, for the past two years, with my 2010 MB Pro. No ill effects whatsoever.

My wife does the clamshell mode on her '08 MBP with an external monitor and Bluetooth mouse and keyboard.
The MBP does run a bit warm while in use but just remember to put your Mac to sleep while not in use and will stay as cool as a cucumber.
