Interesting design:
In one embodiment, the motor drives a fan to dissipate heat by "exchanging air between an inner cavity of the mobile computing device and an outer environment," while a clutch and drum setup allows the same motor to drive an alert device like a vibrator. By joining the two operable components to one motor, space is saved in the already cramped chassis seen in current iPhone iterations such as the iPhone 5.

And where there's moving parts, there's a greater likelihood for failure - and of course, greater battery drain. I just can't see Apple doing this.

This is pretty silly..the processors are getting faster and hotter yes..but thermal management is also coming a long way to ensure that the CPU doesn't cook itself with no fan running air over it. We use thermal pads in our embedded designs at work to drop operating temps of ARM chips quite nicely and have never needed to worry about fans on chips that run at 1 GHz. Even the multi-ARM core 1.2GHz chips I've played with are almost cool to touch..
