Firstly i have to tell you that i am trying to help a fella with a Win XP tower whose wired internet connection has just gone down, although his wife's Windows wireless lap top is ok, i changed the cable, so i suspect it is his Ethernet card. To confirm it is his Ethernet Card, i am now trying very hard to learn about IP addresses !!!.

On my MacBookPro i have found what i thought was my lap tops IP address (in Windows you type in IPCONFIG)
i type that into my browser window and get NOWT
why is that ?, what am I doing wrong please ?

I thought i would see my routers control panel at the very least ???

192.168.1.96 is the address given to you MB by the router. Every device connected to the router will have a different address.

OK friend thanks for that, very helpful.

BUT that still doesnt help me find out if my friends Network Card is the cause of his problem on his Windows computer LOL.

It sounded as if this windows command IPCONFIG was going to tell me what his Routers IP address is, so does that still apply ?

And this Routers IP address will be exactly the same from any computer connected to it ?

Is it then, simply a case of when a computer is looked at from a Router, the IP addresses will be ALL different !!!!!. Jeez i hope i have that right NOW ?

PS. reading that through a few times, i am dammed sure i still dont know what i am doing LOL.

I don't know what to tell you about the network card and am not familiar with IPCONFIG. However, the router's address will not change, it will be the same from any device. Only the devices addresses change, from time to time.

You can download an app for your iOS devices call WiFi scan and it will show you the address of every device on the network.

Try this...

Howdy folks, thank you for your continued help, i can VERY happily report that i have NOW fixed it, a lot easier than i EVER imagined LOL.
I got it home and did the basic stuff with IPCONFIG and PING and found they gave perfect results, which immediately pointed to a Software issue, so i did a System Restore and perfect result, the Internet connection was immediately restored.
