Awhile ago I remember hearing that only apples superdrive could be used to boot the mac and that a generic dvd drive wouldn't work. Is this true? I'd like to be able to boot from a usb thumb drive on the mac mini 2012 and maybe a generic dvd drive in the future. I wanted to find out now prior to ordering the mac mini so I know whether or not I need to pay to get the superdrive.

Not true. You can boot a new Mac Mini from a USB flash drive or from an external optical drive. It does not have to be Apple's drive.
