Hard Restart, home folder for user isn't located error

I have a partitioned macbook pro, and I tried to get hdmi with a tv to work, which it didnt. I couldnt get my screen to show up again, so I had to hard restart the computer. When I turned the computer on again and went to the Mac partition, my preferences were all messed up, my background was changed, I cannot access the finder, and I get the error message...

"The home folder for user "xxxx" isn't located int he usual place, or can't be accessed."
Basically I can't do anything, and I am freaking out. What do i do?

That error occurs when your home folder was moved or you changed the name of it. It definitely will mess things up when that happens.

Repair disk permissions via Disk Utility on the partition your home folder is located in. Worked like a charm for me. The error came from the system not being able to see the home folder due to screwed up permissions. Once you repair it everything goes back to normal and the system can finally see where the home folder is. All your previous settings and stuff should come back.
