I have just updated my software to 10.8.2 and now my sound doesn't work. Any suggestions?

Your sound doesn't work on what? Which Mac, year and model?

Have you checked System Preferences, Sound, to make sure everything is set correctly and that nothing has been muted?

OK, apparently something went wrong with the update. Let's try to reinstall the update, but this time download and install the combo update for 10.8.2. Download from Apple: LINK

Interesting - I shut down my computer last night (didn't want to have the computer on in case we had power problems here in my part of Manhattan). Powered up this am and the problem has returned. ???? This really is puzzling and more than a little annoying. I seems quite clearly to be an operating system problem. Do you think I need to reinstall 10.8.2 (Combo)?

You can certainly try that but it's beginning to look more like a hardware problem rather than software. If your machine is still under warranty and when things get back to normal in the city, take it on in to an Apple store and have them look at it.

There is also a possibility that you have something starting up when you start your Mac that is causing the sound to be turned off.

I think that makes some sense - is there any way that I can identify what is set to change things at start-up or revert to 'factory' settings?

There are several places where programs can startup from. The easiest to find is the login items:

System Preferences, Users & Groups. Highlight your user name and then click on the Login tab. That will show what's starting up.

Something else you might wish to try... and that is do a clean install of Mountain Lion. Let me know if you would like to try that. If after doing a clean install, the sound problem shows up again, we'll almost know for sure that it's hardware.

1. Thanks.
2. Will look at the user permissions
3. Have looked at all of my hardware settings and they don't show any problems - but I'm not sure what they would show in any case.
4. May be willing to undertake a clean install - 'tho that sounds a bit intimidating

Just noted there was piece of something called, apple-scc-2011006 ... of an unknown category with a exclamation triangle next to it. Removed and we'll see what happens.
