I have been reading that Mountain lion runs hotter than other versions of the OS, I have a early 2008 Macbook Pro, I have just repaired it from the Nvidia chip fault, Has anyone found it to be the case that Mountain lion runs hotter?

Not me. I have a 2011 MacBook Pro sitting right next to me running Mountain Lion. Quiet as can be…no fan noise.:)

Your machine is probably a beast compared to my old guy lol

Maybe so…but I'm really not sure Mountain Lion requires that much computing horsepower…as long as the computer meets the minimum system requirements. I'm still really not sure why the video requirements for Mountain Lion are so demanding.

As far as heat. Your MacBook will run pretty hot using OS 10.6 Snow Leopard…especially if you are gaming…or viewing internet videos. So 10.8 may not really be any worse. I have a 2008 MacBook as well (2nd laptop). It's running OS 10.7 Lion…and I don't think that it runs any hotter than 10.6.

I'm not sure what OS you're running currently. But as long as you have an:

- OS 10.6 install disk
- a bootable backup for 10.7 Lion
- or you clone your current HD setup to an external drive with CCC or Super Duper

You could always purchase 10.8 Mountain Lion for the "measly" $19 bucks…install it…and see how it runs for yourself.

If you don't like it…then go back to 10.6 or 10.7.:)

I have ML on my 2008 MBP (last model before the uni-body) and it's running great. The MBP came with Leopard in 2008 and I've done every OS upgrade since. Each one has only been an improvement on the previous OS. No complaints here.

Heat is something you will expreience with any computer - especially noticeable with notebooks. MB, MBA, and MBP are not meant to sit directly on your legs/lap. Use a lapdesk of some sort to avoid feeling the heat. Your Mac knows how to handle the heat. Should it get too hot, it shuts down to prevent damage. The heat doesn't cause damage (unless you've tampered with your fan speeds).

I might just do that, at the moment I'm just on Leopard.

YIKES…I didn't realize you were still on 10.5...time for an OS upgrade!;)

p.s. Unless the OS upgrade will effect compatibility with your current apps.

2011 MacBook Air here, that came with Lion and has been upgraded to Mountain Lion. I have no issues with fan, heat, noise, etc... it gets physically warmer when I watch Flash videos or .m4v videos, but not "hot" and certainly no warmer than any other metal framed laptop running any other version of OS X I've owned.

I have a late 2007 macbook pro that i recently put Mtn Lion on. I don't believe it runs any hotter than it used to. It has always gotten pretty hot during videos or games and still does. I went directly from leopard to mtn lion. I feel like for jumping up 3 versions, it really isn't that different, but I still like it better. Only downside seems to be that my computer takes longer to boot up and shut down then it used to.

I just did a fresh install, I'm very new to the Mac world, Bought the thing faulty for £85 and fixed it :) Are all SATA Hard drives compatible? with Macbooks?

Thanks for the information.

Pretty much all 9.5mm 2.5" SATA drives.

There are/were a couple of the very first 1 TB drives to hit the market that were taller than normal (11mm I think they were - been a couple of years now) you should avoid - not even sure they're still being sold.
