O you poor people who bought pb's before centrino

Apple's done it... they released new PB's back in nov. and all those people who invested in one are 4x slower than the new one... jeez... Either way the are absolutly insane... I'm getting one... hands down.

Yeah Im a bit bummed about it, but I also know that currently my powerbook can run everything natively and it is a sweet machine.. so it's all good.

and if you check out the specs on the new MacBook you will se that they DO NOT have a firewire 800 port, they are not DL superdrives. So if you have a firewire 800 device it will not work unless you have the down converter.

The new MacBook Pros are definitely nice but there are still some things missing that are included in the Powerbooks.

Not in the slightest bit miffed.

My PowerBook worked yesterday.

It is still working today.

It will be working tomorrow.

And if heaven forbid it, in two-three years time it still will be too.

As noted, everything runs natively and thus, I can use Painter, Photoshop, Office and Illustrator without the need for emulating.

Not at all. In fact, satisfied, satisfied that in the five months I have had my PowerBook I have probably had the best 5 months computing I have ever experienced

I am honestly not all impressed with the upgrades. They are nice, but not spectacular.

Well an intel based Mac was never going to change the face of computing. It will however support the software that even today is pretty darn good and impressive.

Software always will be the key thing that is the spectacle.

Well gee Mr. Bandwagon, you might want to slow down for a sec there.

I like the new MacBook too, and I agree that the upgrades are incredible. But in two month's time, I wouldn't be surprised if YOU are right back here on Mac Forums telling us about all the annoying bugs that the first ever MacBook has. It's a brand new product, therefore it's bound to be full of bizarre hardware and software bugs, and those who go flying out to the store to buy it might have to pay a negative, ugly price for their enthusiasm. It might be the most rock-solid Apple laptop ever. It might also explode on people's desks in a week's time! The iPod battery issue, the OS X Panther debut, the iBook Logic Board debacle, and many other incidents tell us that flying to the stores for an Apple debut product isn't a great idea.

The software issue, more than anything else, makes me pause. Rosetta is "supposed" to make the transition seamless, but if you read the Apple site carefully, it's full of all sorts of little scary disclaimers like: "If you own Final Cut Pro, you're going to have to upgrade to a Universal version for $49" and "Third-party Universal products may take awhile." Thanks, but I'll take my trusty 1Ghz Powerbook for now until they've ironed out all that software stuff.

But when and if Rosetta can run all my trusty little Mac programs at full speed on the MacBook and when and if the critics can pronounce the MacBook mechanically sound, I'll be at the Apple store faster than you can say "switch to the Intel chip." But until then, I'll let enthusiastic folks like yourself discover if anything's wrong with the MacBook. Let us know, will ya?

I am sure they knew what they were getting into when they bought it, based on the lenght of time it had been since PowerBooks had been changed and based on what the current PC offerings were.

I love the macbook and everything that comes with it, I just wish I could get it in the 17 inch.

It seems they are changing the line, PowerBooks will eventually be discontinued and also i'm pretty sure they will release a 17inch MacBook. There is only one thing i don't like, and is the name. PowerBook is a better name than MacBook.

yeah, and when that happens I'll pick one up.

The only thing I wish my powerbook had that the macbook has is the IR remote/front row, and the isight. Other than that, you can have the macbook, ill stick with my trusty powerpc powerbook.

I believe that the Mac Book Pro is the replacement for the PowerBook line. I am assuming that the iBook will be called the Mac Book.

They probably changed the name to something other than POWERbook since it no longer has a POWERpc chip in it.

As said on other threads the PowerBook name goes back to 1991 with the release of the 68000 PowerBook 100, and the 68030 140 and 170 PowerBooks.

These were not PowerPC chips. They were the wonderful m68K series which the PowerPC became the heir apparent to in the early 1990s.

You know what, i'm not changing. I'm happy with my 17" Powerbook. It's fast, faster than my imac g5. It runs photoshop much faster than the intel imac in the keynote. If I have to wait a bit longer for a video to compress or a track to rip, so what. Oh.. and one more thing. I don't see a 1600x1050 display in the MacBook yet.

A 256MB optional video card is not spectacular?

Well I have to admit that my December bought Imac G5 has really been replaced far sooner than I had hoped. But **** this is the business things moving quickly, I have decided to put my Imac on Ebay and in a breif attempt to seem adventerous I have ordered the new Mactel Imac. I have already had offers very close to my purchase price so i figure if people do feel somewhat upset there is still a good base of people interested in buying them.

It is good to see Apple still selling these now older models on their shop at the same price and I am pleased that they have raised the Imac price point to allow for the G5 units to maintain their market value even if it is for a short time.

Point being the Imac and Powerbook are great products and I think we can really see this latest news as an evolution as opposed to revolution. Next time I think Mr Jobs should throw radio support into the Ipod range...but thats my humble opinion.

My PB is 3years old and I love it, I've had nothing but good luck with it. I'm disappointed there was no mention of battery life, this can only mean one thing, it stinks.. I will wait until they come out with a 17 in .. My present PB gets over 3 hours and that without trying to conserve..
