Recover old illustrator file?

Hi, I am trying to open an illustrator file, but it seems to have disappeared - from what I can see I have saved a different file over the one that i need (as there are now two of a different file - one with its original name, and one with the name of the file which has disappeared!)

Is there anything I can do to get the old file back?

Do you have a time machine backup

No, I don't think so - my computer is very new, and I haven't downloaded anything, so all i have is what it came with (if anything)

Without a backup your file is gone for good. You overwrote it with another. Turn on Time Machine from now on. You'll also need an external hard drive to use it with.
