How to revive a iPhone

My girlfriends iPhone 3G needs to be redone it won't turn on at all from what she says I still have to try getting it to turn on with the power and the home button still it's charged as well but if the power and the home button process doesn't work how can I install version 5.1.1 on it what are my option it was jailbroken she said so taking it to apple isn't a option she remembers seeing the cydia icon before it stopped working

Plugging it into iTunes and doing a restore. If iTunes can se it, meaning if it comes up under devices then, you could restore it then go through and do the subsequent upgrades

(I think you can ignore the "download it online, it's easy" comment

If iTunes can't see it and you can't reset the handset you're a bit stuck.

You can try Tiny Umbrella to kick it into DFU mode (the mode that sets it ready to restore). Then connect to iTunes.
