Office 2011? Try uninstalling and do a clean install. There is no uninstaller with Office 2011 however here are the instructions from Microsoft. Takes quite a bit of time:-

I wonder if having Word on the Desktop is the problem? Maybe it wasn't installed in the first place?

Sure sounds like it. When you double click on the Word installer takes you through the usual Apple install window. Is this a DVD or downloaded version of Office?
