Hi, this is a small but weird problem.
When I start up Safari, I want to be able to start typing in the address field straight away, but the cursor isn't there, and I have to grab my mouse/ touch the track pad, to then position the cursor over the address field, and then click, before being able to type.

This makes no sense to me! I am a keyboard user, and so launch Safari with a keystroke, then want to start typing straight away and not mess about with the mouse.

Does anyone have a work around for this, as It seems logical to me that the first thing you want to do with a browser is type out an address/search.

Thanks

Simeon

Sorry, I don't know of a work around to place the cursor in the address field box when Safari starts. Perhaps someone can suggest an an Apple Script that will work in the manner you wish. I don't know of a browser that offers that as an option. See the following MacLife Magazine article which describes some scripts and workflows.

It should be in the address field normally so something is wrong here. In the meantime however, push Command + L to shift the focus to the address bar (this works in all the browser as well by the way).

That even works on my Windows machine I'm currently sitting at.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think I'm going to reinstall it and see if that fixes it, but also, the command + L trick is useful to know.

Just an update on this, I never could find how to re-install Safari. Any ideas? I have stopped using it and moved to Chrome for now, as I find hitting command + L a pain in the butt each time.

The problem may be what you have Safari set to open when a new window or tab is opened. If you don't have "Empty Page" or "Top Sites" set, the address bar won't have focus.

Vansmith, thank you, that fixed it.
However, I have always had my browser open with my igoogle page as default and never had this issue before. i'm guessing something changed at google and the page loads differently now.
But at least this fixes the issue.
