System prefs stuck

When I open system preferences the rainbow wheel of death begins spinning and never stops.
This happens no matter how I enter system preferences.
System 10.7.4

BTW, I've tried upgrading to 10.8 with no success. Even got charged by Apple for one upgrade even though they owed me one for my new AirBook.

G'day and welcome to the forums.

Under warranty take it back. And the upgrade for Mountain Lion would work with that specific model only. New iMac and got free upgrade but it is for iMacs only.

Really? Nobody on a Mac forum with a clue about this?

I guess these operating systems really HAVE gotten complicated.
