I normally take pictures at about 15 Mpixels with my digital camera. Quite often when I want to use these pics in other applications ( Word ) i require a smaller file size to do this effectively. Is there anywhere on iMac where I can change the file size and keep the picture the same ?

There are lots of ways to do this, but I'll limit myself to JUST using iPhoto and Preview.
1. Drag the photo you want out of iPhoto and onto the Desktop. This creates a copy.
2. Open the copy in Preview. Resize it. Save it.
3. Use this copy for your intended purpose. When you're done, trash the copy on the desktop.
