Magic Mouse connects but freezes desktop

Hi

I have tried to get my magic mouse working on my new Macbook Air. I turn on the mouse and it connects but everything freezes except the pointer. It moves but nothing happens when I click. Same thing happens to my track pad. Pointer moves but nothing else happens.
