Quite a few people own Mac desktops. Sure, notebooks outnumber desktops but many of us still own one.

I have an iMac..members here have all combinations of Apple computers..from old PowerMac's, to Mac Mini's, Mac Pro's, iMacs to a lot of Macbooks and MBP's..

Since Apple is selling Mac Pro's and iMacs, what makes you say that they are dead? Perhaps more people prefer mobility these days and opt for the notebooks over the desktops..

I used to have an iMac but since I also to the IT stuff at work, I convinced my boss to get my a MBP as the portability makes it much easier to work on machines outside of my house. If I didn't need the portability, I'd love to still have my iMac. I do still have a Mac Mini though, it sits under my TV as my media center.

I hate being tied to a desk so I gave up all desktops in 06.

I know lots of people who own laptops but never move them from a desk.
Laptops seem to be more trendy at the moment. If you ask why did you get a laptop over a desktop they never seem to know.

Hi Germany Chris,

I have a Mac Pro desktop. Need the expandability and power. I used to have an iMac and a Macbook Pro before I sold them. Owned 2 iMacs and both had some smudges, dark spots at the corner of the screens. Since I am not always mobile, a desktop is just fine.

Notebook computers have been outselling desktops for some time, and that's both in the PC and Mac worlds. It doesn't mean that desktops are outmoded, it just means that folks are more mobile nowadays and want the freedom of taking their computer with them.

Personally, I have an iMac at home and for mobility, use my iPad 3 when I'm away.

A few years out of date but here's a nice set of graphs showing how this is the case for Apple.

Been using just a laptop for months now, but I've always preferred the screen changeability, easier upgrade-ability, and more "grounded" feeling of owning a desktop computer. Not to mention they tend to cost less and give you better specs, my laptop hasn't moved from it's spot on my desk in months.

This isn't the case for many people though, they tend to want the simplicity and portability of a lightweight portable computer (hence the success of Apple's MacBook Air)

I would seem that with the creation and popularization of the iPad it would be better of most people to have some sort of desktop and the iPad. A mobile computer and a mobile iPad don't make much sense.

That's a false statement. People DO need a computer along with the mobile devices like iPad or Android tablets or the new MS surface. Whether the computer is a notebook or desktop matters mostly on the needs of the user and I'm sure there are enough members here with a notebook and iPad and end up carrying the iPad for a lot of generic uses and take the notebook when they know they need to be productive on the go..

I almost never use my laptop as a mobile computer. My reason for having it is strictly ergo as my preferred location for using my Mac is my recliner and it is far easier to use a lap desk and 15in MBP than rig a swing out arm for a monitor so I can use my desktop Mac (though it would be my preference if reasonable).

I have an iMac, 15" MBP with hi-res screen & iPad 1st gen. Use the MBP in the office and on the road, iMac when working from home. I charge my IPad ~ twice a week...mainly used after hours and insomnia hours...like now! I occasionally use the iPad with the iMac BT keyboard for drafting documents.

Gotta say I absolutely love both the iMac & MBP, they each have their place & wouldn't give either up!

As the owner of a mobile Mac (MacBook Pro) and an iPhone AND an iPad, I assure you it makes tons of sense.
