I recently inherited a late 2008 13 inch aluminum macbook. It was my brother's and I'd like to copy all the data on the HDD in case I'd ever like to look back at it. I don't think I'm really interested in making a backup of the HDD (but if that's the best way to do what I want, I will). I don't need any of the programs but he has tons of movies, music, and documents and I don't want to go through all of them right now. I have a 500 gb external hard drive. Basically, I want to be able to access all of his files later so I can format it and upgrade to mountain lion now. Would it be best to clone the HDD or use time machine or what?

It is always a good idea to have a bootable clone. Super Duper or Carbon Copy Cloner are both good choices. Personally, I use Carbon Copy Cloner.
