Spell Check iPhone

Does anyone know how to use spell check on iPhone? In other words how to you accept a word check "suggestion".It seems like when the word pops up and then you touch to accept it doesn't take.

Hit the space button and the correction will take. If there is no correction, it will leave the misspelled word with a red underline, you can hit that see if you can correct it or correct it yourself..

You don't have to touch anything to accept the suggestion. Just hit the space bar and it will correct itself. If you notice, there is a little x near the suggestion. Tap that if you DON'T want to accept the suggestion.

This was the most confusing thing to me the first time I tried typing on the 1st generation iPad. Didn't notice the little "x" and didn't realize what it meant. It's an easy one to get tripped up on.
