Power Down Problem

Non techie here. Just picked up a new MacBook Pro. Lovely machine but it doesn't want to power down. It just grinds away until I force quit by hitting the power button. On my previous gen Book this might take a max of 2-3 minutes but this thing just hangs. I can take it back in but any suggestions first? Thanks.

What does this have to do with iOS 6??

Assuming you meant Mountain Lion, are you sure you have QUIT (not closed, QUIT) all programs?

Yes, Lion. My mistake. Let me make sure we're quitting vs. just closing. That's probably it.
