I purchased an older Macbook, and it appears my hard drive crashed, so I purchased a new one, and I am trying to get an operating system loaded back on it. A friend had a grey disk from apple, that came with her newer Macbook. I keep getting the Mac OS X can't be loaded on this computer error. I saw Something mentioned about a white disk, from the Apple store. What operating system can I load on this machine as it originally came with Tiger. Any help appreciated.

Can you identify which MacBook you have? If the machine originally came pre-loaded with Tiger, it could be a 2006 MacBook. If it's an early 2006 model it can run Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and no later. If it's a late 2006 model, it can run Lion.

based on the serial number, the apple website gives me those two models numbers. How do I find out when it was actually made?

OK, I just looked it up in Mactracker. It's a late 2006 MacBook released in November of 2006. That means you can run Lion on it, but not Mountain Lion.

The "white" disk mentioned can only be the retail version of Snow Leopard since that was the only version of OS X to be released on a white DVD with the Snow Leopard in the background.

the disk I have is Mac OS version 10.6.3. It is a grey dvd, and I keep getting an error message that this operating system cannot be installed on this computer. Is there anything I need to do with the hard drive to get it ready for installation? I have been in the disk utility and formatted it.

Thanks

Texas, where else?

You will not be able to install OS X from someone else's grey disc. Those discs are system type specific and will only install on the same system type they shipped with.

Call Apple and order a retail copy of Snow Leopard - they are still selling it for $20 - you have to call them to get it "800 - MY - APPLE"
