I have a early 2010 mac pro with a 2.93 GHz quad core processor 8 gig ram. I have a friend that gave me a 2 X 2.26 GHz quad core main board w/ 8 gig ram.
I mainly use this computer for e-mail, internet brousing, occasional gaming, excel, word etc..

which main board will be better ???.

The quad core 2.93ghz that you currently have is better for your purposes.

why?

why? I guess you are saying that the one processor that is faster is better than 2 slower ones?

I knew that would be your next question!;)

The reason is...in one case you have 4-cores running at 2.93ghz...in the other case you have 8-cores running at 2.26ghz. NORMALLY...the 8-core setup would be faster than the 4-core setup.

The deciding factor is (of the computing activities you mentioned)...more than likely nothing is going to use more than 2-cores.

Thus then the question really is...is 2-cores running at 2.26ghz faster than 2-cores running at 2.93ghz??? The answer...2-cores running at 2.93ghz is faster!;)

p.s. The other important thing to remember is...these two logic boards are of similar vintage(2009/2010)...so from an architecture standpoint they are similar. So the main deciding factors are...cpu speed & number of cores used.
