A calamity befell my external hard drive attached to my iMac. Disk Utility could not repair it. I have copied all the files that were OK to another external hard drive, but when I try to drag files from the sick hard drive to the trash, I get a message saying I "cannot put them in the trash because they cannot be deleted". How do I wipe this hard drive clean?

If you have everything copied off that you can get, open Disk Utility in Applications/Utilities and erase that drive. That will wipe it clean unless there is some bad issue with the drive itself.
