I just created a Lion SD card installer after legitimately purchasing ML from Mac App Store, what are the real limits of this? Is this DMG/installer actually, really, in any way tied to my Apple ID?

I remember with my Snow Leopard disc i used it to recover a lot of my friend's computer when they did something stupid and there was never any issue. Is there actually any tracking at all of how much I use this installer I've prepared? :\

The download is linked to your Apple ID, so if you want to download the installer again you have to use your Apple ID. Once you have the installer, there is no real license for the OS. The user agreement allows you to install ML on all the Mac's under your control (household, so on)..

Installing it on your friends computers without them purchasing it from Apple is not a legal use of it.

Thats ok

Just to spell it out:

Friend has Mac with Mountain Lion on it

Friend's Mac needs formatting & re-installing.

I already have an SD card with ML installer good to go.

Whats the problem? Should he have to needlessly download it again?

Is there anything that makes it a problem to use my SD card installer, is there actually anything on that installer that makes it mine? Or is it just a generic installer? Does my installer identify to my Apple ID in any way?

Thats kind of a gray area. Personally I'd say you are OK to do it. He already has a license for ML, you are just sharing the installer.

^^^ Agree with Stretch. Don't see an issue - as long as they have a license, you should be good to go.

Unlike about half my Windows using friends, thus far, I just haven't had any of my Mac using friends screw up OS X to the point where I needed to reinstall to fix it.

Cool, so its safe to say that the ML installer is unlikely to carry any identifier that links back to my AppleID?

None of the Apple software are links directly to your apple ID or require a serial number that I've seen. The gatekeeper is getting to the DMG file. Once you get it, it's the same DMG file for everyone..
