Is there a way to get rid of the (eliminate)

Yes, there is a way. Open Mail Preferences, and go to "Composing". Under the heading "Responding" remove the check from the box that says "Quote the text of the original message."

Yes, but that clears out the entire email. With that unchecked you don't see any of the Reply message. I just want to get rid of the "On Oct 3, 2012, at 7:50 AM so and so wrote:"
