My friend recently updated to ios6 on his and his wifes iphone 3gs' and since then when he receives an iMessage his wifes phone gets it too. When his wife did her update she was prompted to make a change and by doing so it somehow synced the iMessages to both phones. It does not sync the normal texts only iMessages. does anyone know how to correct this, both phones were updated to ios6 over the air, not connected to iTunes

I'm guessing they used the same email to configure iMessage on both devices, so both are receiving iMessages

Go into Settings - Messages - Send & Receive. The receive section will note, "You can be reached by iMessage at" and it will normally include a phone number and list of registered check-marked e-mail addresses that will receive messages. You can tap on the checked e-mail addresses to de-select them; just make your friend and his wife have different addresses selected to ensure they won't get each others messages.
