USB Superdrive and Macbook Pro

Just got a new Macbook pro with retina display and I can't get it to recognize the USB Super drive plugged into the USB port. The disk spins up but never mounts on the desktop. Can't load my software without it..... $3500 paper weight at the moment..... not happy!

My geek status revoked.

The one thing I hadn't checked was looking for the drive in the finder app. The USB super drive icon doesn't appear on the desktop but is available in the finder. Can't believe I didn't check that.
