Is a subscription to iTunes Match required or optional when accessing Music on Apple TV?

Optional. However if you want to listen to your music without enabling Match, you will need to have iTunes running and Home Sharing enabled.

I have Match, but use it primarily for downloading music to my iPhone on the fly. At home, I have a Mac Mini running iTunes all the time and have Home Sharing turned on and my Apple TV connected to it. Runs smooth and I can not only listen to music, but also watch my huge library of movies and shows as well.

Even with iTunes running and sharing enabled on computer and Apple TV I still only get an invitation to subscribe to iTunes Match for $25 to view through iCloud.
That is not what was presented when first installed Apple TV.
