I have a 15" mid 2010 Macbook Pro. I want to upgrade the internal hard drive. What is the fastest hard drive for this model? Is SSD overkill?

An SSD is certainly not overkill. If you can afford to replace your standard hard drive with a large enough SSD to meet your needs, that would be a great upgrade. You might wish to take a look at the Other World Computing "Data Doubler" kit. It's a kit where you remove your optical drive and place it in an external carrier and in its place install a SSD.
