• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

Would like to save DVDs to ext.hard drive for play on TV. Do not want to save to Mac hard drive. Is this possible? Are programs needed to be able to do this?I'm not computer savvy.

If you're not in the USA it almost certainly isn't illegal for you. Eg, in Britain it is specifically legal so long as the DVD is your property and the copy is for your personal use only.

It's legal to make a personal copy from the DVD you own in many countries. But since these forums are owned and operated in the US we abide by the law and refrain from any discussion of the topic. If and when congress decides to change that law (DRM) we will be happy to open discussions.
