Extenal hard drive

I have an 2 - iMacs and a windows computer. I am trying to set it up so my external hard drive can be seen by all 3 computers. I installed a new router (Netgear N600) and that works fine. Now that I have plugged the external hard drive into the usb port on the router I am stuck. Nothing I have done has allowed me to see the ehd. Can anyone suggest something?

Agreed. Most routers are very specific about how the drive must be formatted in order for the computers to "see" it.
