I opened a document from a friend that was laid out in print mode. As such I can't get back to viewing and opening my Word documents in normal mode, which includes margins at top and page number/word count at bottom.

How can I set it back to the default screen?

Don't know what your problem is but viewing a Word document in "Print Layout View" clearly shows the margins at the top and the word count at the bottom along with the page numbers (if present). You didn't say which version of Word you're using but in Word 2011 there are 6 different viewing modes to choose from. You set the view from the "View" menu at the top.

You can zoom in to change the layout from multiple pages in the view to one page. I just learned that yesterday. My class syllabus was in multi-page view (annoying!!) so I randomly started zooming out and in just to see what would happen and it worked. I had previously tried changing the 'view' and it never fixed the issue. But zooming in worked. Good luck!

Any "zoom" or "view" setting less than 100% in Word 2011 will shift the mode into multiple views. For example: setting it to 75% will result in viewing 4 pages at a time. Of course much depends on the resolution of your monitor.

i'm running Office 2011 on 13" MBP. i checked to see what the view options were and there was not a "Normal Mode." The default view was print layout. I get the feeling you are talking about an all white screen where the margins were there was not space around the "page" with exception to the margins. I think xdunlapx hit the nail on the head. you have to zoom in or out to get the right look you are l trying to achieve.
