Transferring photos from an old iMac using iPhoto6 to a new iMac using iPhoto9

My old iMac is on the brink of crashing mechanically. Thought it was the hard drive and it turned out its probably the display. Having a huge problem transferring my photos from my old hard drive (works perfect in the new enclosure) to my brand new iMac. If I hook up the old hard drive to the old iMac (late 2006) I can see the photos in Preview but my old iMac display crashes before I can try to recover them. When I hook up my old hard drive to the new iMac I have recovered movies and other photos apparently not stored in iPhoto6. Can anyone help me figure out how to find my iPhoto6 photos on my old hard drive and transfer them to the new iMac. Many thanks.
