Cannot Move To Trash; Cannot Do Anything With Trash

Alright, I bought my Macbook a few months ago secondhand.

From the beginning I noticed an odd quirk about my new Macintosh; it wouldn't let me drag anything to the trash; if I did so, it would only allow me to delete an item immediately.

It didn't really bother me, so I ignored it. Today, I backed everything up to Time Machine, and I deleted a folder that held well over 100 GB of material.

To my surprise, it seemingly was deleted; however, my Mac is still showing only 40 GB left, as before.

What has happened? I'm totally confused, and I've been using a Mac for years now. Does anyone have any suggestions? Has anyone else experienced this problem?

It's a 13-inch early 2011 Macbook Pro, if that makes any difference.

Repair permissions and try again. The Trash is probably not emptying.

And did you erase the drive and do a clean install of the OS to get rid of any leftovers from previous owner/s?

Stupid question: Is what you put or tried to put in the trash on an external drive?

Tried repairing permissions dozens of times. No clean install, but I'm planning on doing that now.

Lol, no, it's not from an external drive. I'm no noob! :D
