Remember back in the day when they used to make software that would read a floppy sector-by-sector, recovering as much as possible and skipping when it found an error? What we need is the modern equivalent of that... I wonder if something exists.

Will search around. Yes remember that well and used it also with damaged media.

Indeed, I used to use such software. No, there's no physical damage visible.

Old trick but, if you have any cold vodka... put some on a non abrasive cloth and wipe the dvd from the inside going outward in a very straight direction *never in a circle*. Try the disk again. If there IS any physical damage, toothpaste would work to fill in the scratches. Yep, I've done this in the past.
