Unlike Windows, when I drag a file to a new directory to move it, the directory that I was in changes to show the new directory where I dropped the file. This is very disconcerting, as I usually intend to stay in the first directory when I'm moving files around. Is there any way to change this? Is this normal behavior?

Yes, that's normal. No, I don't think you can change it. You mention what you "usually intend" but programmers have to make a choice. Apple's programmers picked the opposite behavior from the choice made by Microsoft's programmers. Oh well. I'd wager that it's a close call as to the percentage of users who like it one way as opposed to the other.

How are you doing this? Do you have one Finder window open, or two?

This happens when I have only one Finder window open. With two I can avoid it, of course, but that's a little regressive, as that's how it had to done back in Windows 1 and 2!

You're not using Windows. That's the way it's been for as long as I've been using the Mac OS. Which OS X version are you using?

You can download a free File Manager that will do exactly what you want. I use one that behaves exactly like the old Norton File Commander. It's called muCommander and is free. Download LINK.
