This is my current laptop (except mine has upgraded RAM (3GB) and storage (500GB)):

MacBook "Core 2 Duo" 2.1 13" (White-08) Specs (Early 2008, MB402LL/A*, MacBook4,1, A1181, 2242) @ EveryMac.com

Currently it has a failing harddrive and my current plan is to get a new harddrive and try and get a couple more years out of it. The problem I'm having is where to get a proper copy of 10.7. Before failing, I was running 10.6.8, but I don't want to purchase a copy of that for an outrageous price.

Is there any chance of me finding 10.7? Is it even worth it? Alternatively, could my laptop even manage Mountain Lion?

Thanks for any help.

Your MacBook can run Lion, but not Mountain Lion. And the only way to get Lion is to call Apple and have them sell you the $69 USB drive with Lion on it.
