question about what 'other' is taking up 55 gig on my hard drive

Hello,
I'm trying to save some space and I looked in 'about this mac' and saw that, aside from movies, pictures, music, apps and backup, 55 gig was being used in a section known as 'other.
Can anyone tell me what that 'other' might be and how I can tidy it up?
