on a mabook pro touchpad , only the middle and lower part can be used for clicking/pressed .. upper half can only be touched. is that how it is normally ?

Yes. The closer you get to the top of the trackpad (closer to the top = closer to the keyboard)…the harder it is to do the "mechanical click" (and easier towards the bottom).

This is because the trackpad is "hinged" at the top. So it's a "leverage thing".;)
