Hello,

an appeal for suggestions please.

Symptoms: recurrent KPs. Occurred in 10.5 and now 10.7.4. Seem to happen when surfing web. Seems to be OK in safe mode. No beneft from repairing permissions (every time it repairs the same thing though, odd?). Drive OK. I need to run AHT to check RAM but can't get into it with D at startup.

I think there might be a hardware fault?

System:
Early 2008 MacBook, 2.4Ghz Duo, 4GB RAM (upgraded, not got original) on 10.7.4. Just done clean install, no upgrades. Installed Lion Recovery Update. Came from a friend so no discs for AHT I'm afraid.

In the meantime, many thanks suggestions.

It's KP'd 4 times this morning (see below)

Thanks for any suggestions...maybe it's time this one went to the laptop graveyard...

Cheers
John

If it happens on two different installs, one of which is a clean install, I'd be looking at the hardware especially since the BSD process noted is the kernel which is responsible, in part, for managing memory. Do you have any spare memory chips to test this theory?

hmmm OK good point.

Sadly no, sold the old chips a while ago.

I don't have the install disks either so can't run AHT to check the memory. It won't load from boot-up either (D or Control-D).

Is there an easy 3rd party way of checking it?

So duff memory to blame then I presume? Is there a way I can work out which of the banks is duff (I have 2x 2GB)?

Personally, I would replace both banks with identical memory modules. Right now memory is inexpensive.
