I have mountain lion. I will also be editing the videos on the computer and be uploading them to youtube. And I would like it to be at least 720p. I have been looking at this one- Hauppauge HD-PVR 2 Gaming Edition TV Tuners and Video Capture 1480 Black- Does it work for mac? Would it work with the hdmi cable in my xbox? Would I need to buy new software? I am truly confused. If you have answers or other suggestions please post I need help!

I don't know about the hauppage solution but Elgaro make exactly what you want Elgato Game Capture HD
Just want to note that there is NO cable currently available to connect an Xbox 360 to a Thunderbolt-equipped Mac. The HDMI-to-MiniDisplayPort cables on the market are NOT compatible with Thunderbolt, as Intel is still hogging the proprietary rights to the technology. Basically, Thunderbolt ports can only receive input that comes straight from another Thunderbolt device. There are a bunch of Thunderbolt-to-HDMI cables out there, but they are strictly for output from the Thunderbolt-equipped computer to the connected device. So unfortunately, if your Mac is mid-2011 or newer, there is simply no way to play or record Xbox on your Mac's display. I found this out the hard way -__-

There has never been a way to "capture" external video on any computer - don't care what operating system you have - without a piece of hardware known as a "video capture" device and the appropriate software for that device.
No Mac ships with a video capture device and 99% of Windows machines do not ship with one either.
Even the couple of iMacs that shipped with a "video in" port and almost all Windows machines that have a video in port that allow you to watch external video (the way a TV does) could not capture that video to the hard drive without adding a piece of "video capture" hardware.

Personally, I'd take a hard look at the Hauppage for a Windows machine.
With a Mac, ElGato is the way I'd go.
Make sure you get the device that is right for you.

Their devices will not capture anything with HDCP copy protection (used on HDMI such as most Blu-Ray discs and probably some over-the-air TV).

Yes the Happauges work on your IMac I use it all the time you will need to get EyeTv to record from it and that is all!
